Nura

HEADPHONES THAT LEARN AND ADAPT

I joined Nura as a freelancer, to work on redesigning the App — the companion to the multi-award winning Nuraphone, that automatically learns and adapts to your unique hearing. With the successful launch of the App (2.0), a new Support Website, and UX work for the Firmware Update and Language Translations I was offered a full-time position as UX & UI Designer.

Nura’s revolutionary products emit sounds into your ear and use NASA grade microphones to measure otoacoustic emissions (the tiny signals returned from your cochlea) — which are then translated by the App to create a personalised hearing profile based on the tones you are sensitive to.

The 3rd iteration of the App was designed to be a much more experiential version, with ‘offline’ features that could be used even when a device wasn’t connected. The Website featured some great content in the ‘Backstage’ blog, with interviews, reaction videos, playlists and culture articles — I redesigned the blog so that it could be pulled into the App, creating a magazine style feed.

I also designed a Sales tool to advertise the products while the App was idle. The Sales tool was to be used as a demonstration for customers waiting at the physical ‘SoundStudios’, in Melbourne, Sydney, London, San Francisco and New York.

The App has to account for multiple products with different on-boarding and calibration flows.
The connection between the digital and the physical experience needs to be seamless, so that the App works as an extension of the products.

The visual language of the App is linked to the auditory experience. When the user switches from ‘Neutral’ to ‘Personalised’, sound floods into the headphones, the grey colour animates to the bespoke colour of the user and the Hearing Profile representation morphs into their unique shape.

“I hired Neil to head up UI/UX at Nura based on his attention to detail and unwavering mission to give the best experience possible to customers.
Bridging the gap between Nura’s sonic experience and the digital interface of the app was something that he achieved brilliantly, creating a simple yet unique experience.

Outside of his direct responsibilities, Neil was a great team player, always suggesting creative solutions to problems that kept the customer at front of mind.”
